Los Angeles trio Wake Up Lucid has dropped a dirty, rock ‘n’ roll bomb with plenty of bluesy fallout in the form of their EP, Sugar. Sounding like a So Cal smokehouse, Wake Up Lucid is like a slightly more dangerous (and more enticing) Black Crows and a less annoying White Stripes.
The band makes it a family affair with Ryan Baca on lead vocals and guitar and his cousins Ian Baca on bass and Jamie Baca on the skins. Sugar sports plenty of guitar bite, savage drumming, aged vocals and groovy bass-lines. Like a Whiskey-fueled night on the town, Wake Up Lucid feels as good as it sounds.
The stand-out track is “Paint Your Lips” with the instrumental freak-out during the final minute of the song. All told Sugar is entirely too short, with a run time only a hair over 16 minutes, and leaves the listener craving for repetitive spins. For fans of Night Horse, Kings of Leon and Black Stone Cherry, Wake Up Lucid has provided your new staple album with Sugar.
