It is about 3:30 pacific time here in LA, and many reports including CNN, The LA Times and AOL have reported that Michael Jackson has died! WOW! Say whatever you want about his controversy, his life, his children, but make no mistake, he was a living legend! In the pop world, there are only a handful of artists that were as popular as the gloved one; Madonna, Prince & Paul McCartney are the only real huge superstars left! I am a product of the 80’s, and growing up in that era Prince, Madonna and Michael Jackson were the only things that mattered in popular music. I once bought the famed Michael Jackson red leather jacket at Zody’s, and wore it proudly no less! My whole family was raised on Michael Jackson, my aunt Berta even had an MJ themed birthday party. The first piece of music I ever bought was the Bad cassette, I played that thing non-stop!
MJ has been in the spot light since he was a child. Growing up that way couldn’t have been easy, especially with a father who was extremely hard on him and his siblings. How many child stars do you know that are without demons? How many of those people grew up and were never heard from again? MJ changed the musical scene in the 80’s when he teamed up with record producer Quincy Jones. They produced hit after hit, after hit! He and Madonna also put MTV on the map, back when they actually played music videos. He was an innovator in music and video, being one of the first artist to believe in the video aspect of music making. Before MJ, music videos were just boring. As a kid I always wondered, “How he was able to have the street light up under his feet liked that?”, in the video for Billie Jean. My cousin Laura, was scared of two things in her life: Skeletor and the Thriller music video. He is part of our pop culture, wether you like it or not! The Moon Walk was something we all tried, come on, admit it!
MJ dying is like a part of your life dying. My youth is just a little less today! We here at ETS love music, and we strongly believe that music is the soundtrack to our lives! A part of that is no longer with us. If not MJ, then there are those songs and artists that are a piece of you because they make you remember a part of your life that made you happy. MJ’s music brings back all those memories, he was part of the soundtrack to my growing up! Make no mistake about it, the entertainment industry has lost some heavy hitters over the past week: David Carradine, Farrah Fawcett & Ed McMahon. We here at ETS send our condolences to their respective families and their legions of fans! Please feel free to post comments on your favorite MJ memories!
