Ringside – Lost Days

Electro-rock duo, Ringside has released their second full-length, Lost Days: 15 tracks of indie-soul or alt ‘n’ b or the complete opposite of She Wants Revenge except for the dancability of their work.  Suffice to say, Ringside is a bit tough to categorize.

Sporting singer/guitaritst/songwriter Scott Thomas and beat-maker/producer Balthazar Getty, Ringside craft tunes that sound like Stone Temple Pilots, Danger Mouse, Jack Johnson and late stage U2 thrown into a blender, then poured into a margarita glass with colored sugar on the rim.  It’s a bizarre mix, but the end result is quite charming in its own, weird way.  Thomas sings with the zeal of a man facing his firing squad, but when his pained vocal work is paired with the up-tempo beats from Getty, the end result is a head-scratching toe-tapper.

It’s not to say that Lost Days is unlistenable due to its wacky sonic roadmap.  On the contrary, it would do well to be played in a social setting, specifically among a mixed attendance.  It’s pop enough for the casual music listener, interesting enough for the music geeks to appreciate and smooth enough to sooth over anyone in between.

Fans of Foster the People, Broken Bells and genre-bending, cross-over artists will likely dig on Lost Days as the unique compositions will resound welcomingly in your ears.
