“Breaking into the Pool” comes from Gladiola’s third album Off You Go, a collection of songs that largely live in the world of adolescence, drawn from the stories singer/songwriter Madden-Fuoco gleans from his job as a high school English teacher in Boston. The settings go back and forth between the city and the suburbs, and the songs tackle themes of race, immigration, and wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. “Breaking into the Pool,” however, deals with listless summer daydreaming and the accompanying longing.
