Remember that monstrosity of a hit “Hey Ya!” by OutKast? This week’s Covers Revue will delve into a great cover that has been a YouTube sensation: Matt Weddle of Arizona folk band Obadiah Parker covering OutKast’s “Hey Ya!”
We all know OutKast’s version. The high-energy, pump-up, Funk-tinged song contains only an acoustic guitar, claps and a thick beat during the verses. When it comes to the chorus, on the other hand, we’re introduced to Andre 3000’s harmonization, bubble-bouncy effects and that shoulder-shifting, finger-wiggling dance! Considered to be one of the catchiest songs of 2003, “Hey Ya!” took that year by storm and was even considered the 20th Most Successful Song of the 2000’s by Billboard.
Now Obadiah Parker is credited with this cover but this YouTube sensation is merely lead singer Matt Weddle with an acoustic guitar at an Open Mic Night (with someone playing guitar off camera). No matter, though. Weddle KILLS! This version of “Hey Ya!” actually gave me the chills.
What makes this cover incredible is Weddle’s voice. This bearded and burly Arizonian has got some lungs along with really knowing how to work that guitar! The chord progression sounds good, which some people have trouble with, especially when trying to cover something that doesn’t have an obvious melody. The accompanying guitar is a little quiet but adds so much that extenuates the song.
Obadiah Parker’s translation of the OutKast hit deserves to be a hit itself. Weddle tackles the challenge of creating a melodious sound out of beats and claps. This cover is one of those rarities that could be considered better than the original itself! One thing is for sure: it makes me want to show him my baddest behavior!
Can I just say what a relief to find someone who actually knows what theyre talking about on the internet. You definitely know how to bring an issue to light and make it important. More people need to read this and understand this side of the story. I cant believe youre not more popular because you definitely have the gift.
