Hailed as the first real punk band, the Ramones have left their imprint all over the music industry. You’re familiar with their logo and their songs that are played left and right. There’s no doubt: The Ramones are the most influential punk band of all time.
As soon as their self-titled debut was released in 1976, the band was already getting the attention of any veteran band out there. Ramones was also home to the song “Havana Affair.” A satirical take on the Bay of Pigs, “Havana Affair” displays all the qualities of original punk rock: crunchy guitars, power chords, a simple drum beat and simple song structure. There’s even a little bit of some subtle cowbell in there for you crazies out there! Dee Dee Ramone’s weird fake accent and commanding voice demand your attention with the lyrics “Baby, baby, make me loco/Baby, baby, make me mambo!” above the guitars and heavy bass. This song just drips of Ramones attitude!
When you listen to 90’s power-house band Red Hot Chili Peppers’ version of “Havana Affair,” (recorded for We’re a Happy Family: A Tribute to Ramones) the attitude of the 80’s punk gods is nowhere to be found. But in Ramones’ original guitarist Johnny Ramone’s opinion, it didn’t matter.
Johnny took full control of the Ramones tribute album and told all the bands to make the songs their own. According to the album’s wikipedia page, Johnny loved the Peppers’ version so much that he decided to open the album with it. The Peppers’ song beat out covers by Rob Zombie, Metallica, KISS, Green Day and Rancid.
Upon hearing the very first note, you know this track is different. It opens with lead guitarist John Frusciante’s slow guitar melody and an organ in the background. The song is a whole lot slower than the punk-paced tempo of the original and lead singer Anthony Kiedis tackles the lyrics well. The highlight of this song is the array of guitar styles that Frusciante implements, showing off his undeniable talent.
Personally, I’m not quite sure the slowed tempo sits well with me, but it definitely does reek of Chili Peppers flavor. What really turned me on to this cover is their live performance of it on their DVD, Live at Slane Castle. Honestly, it translates way better on stage if you ask me!
What do you think? And put aside your obligatory “hater-ade” since the Ramones are just too great to replicate! …
