Artist of the Week

Artist of the Week- Miike Snow

At first glance, you might not know the Swedish band Miike Snow but after taking a closer look, you might realize that you have been exposed to them!  Miike Snow consists of singer/songwriter Andrew Wyatt, Christian Karlsson and Pontus Winnberg.  It is the duo of Karlsson and Winnberg that you may have heard of.  Together, they form the very popular production/writing duo named Bloodshy & Avant.

Bloodshy & Avant have either written or produced for: Madonna, Britney Spears, Rob Thomas, Ms. Dynamite, Christina Milian and countless others.  They have also done remixes for Passion Pit, Vampire Weekend and Madonna.  They have worked a lot with Britney Spears and were the ones who produced and wrote her hit song, “Toxic.”  Another one of their stand-out tracks is “This is How A Heart Breaks” from Rob Thomas.  Needless to say, that this is a very powerful/popular duo in the music industry.

Miike Snow formed in 2007 and they decided to go to work for themselves.  Instead of producing hit after hit for other people, why not do it themselves?  What a winning combination too!  My first impression of their debut album, “Miike Snow,” was that it wasn’t anything to write home about.  But after a few listens, I discovered that it was a really good album.  Their musical style is a mix between electronica, Brit pop and dance.   They are not going to move you lyrically, but somehow they do a good enough job with their excellent production.  I am a person who really enjoys lyrics, so for me this is a first.

This band was not made to make you think deeply about the meaning of life.  Their album is a fun loving album with many danceable beats. As I write this blog, I am smiling because this is really out of the zone for me.  I typically do not like groups like this, but I can’t say it enough; somehow it works.  I am always open to new music and this band reminds me of the band C.S.S., which was introduced to me by KINESUS BEATS on our Facebook page.  My good friend Cobe Guzman, was the one who introduced me to this cool band, so major props to him!

If you are into dance or electronic music, then this is definitely a band for you to check out.  The production value on the album is phenomenal.  It is an excellent album to put on during a BBQ or just chillin’ with the homies.  They may have an acquired sound to some, but it is definitely a sound you need to acquire.  In listening to their KCRW session, they mixed up their tracks, which is something I enjoy that bands rarely do!  They tend to extend or play with tracks during their live shows, which makes them a good band to see live.

When I first listened to their debut album, I first thought the album was OK.  But after further review, I came to realize that is was better than I first anticipated.  The album, in my opinion, begins with a very Brit Pop/Top 40 sound.  As the album progresses, it be comes more electronica.  The synthesizers become more aggressive and the songs get a bit more psychedelic.  The track Plastic Jungle reminds me of The Beatles track I Am The WalrusSilvia was reworked (just a tad bit) for their KCRW performance, making the track a little longer than the standard Lp version.   The very Pop sounding For No One, sounds like it should be featured in a Geico Caveman Commercial.

In keeping with my promise to expose our listeners to good music from anywhere, I hope I can deliver with this band.  Unfortunately, this band is only touring in the UK, but if our legions of fans demand a U.S. show, then I’m sure they’ll have to listen.  So enjoy the music and follow the links provided below to discover a cool new band!  Enjoy!
