I know that our lovely Little Sara does album reviews, but when I hear good music I feel it is my obligation to pass the word on. The Chicago based indie group The Empires release “Bang” today. This is their second album released, with their first being 2008’s “Howl.” In a world with pretty crappy, well marketed, disposable rock bands out there, The Empires are leaving their mark by delivering a quality product without the restraints of corporate America.
What impressed me about the album was that it was entirely produced and written by the band. The band took over all aspects of this project and produced a stellar album, a great achievement, especially without the heavy hand of the recording industry. In today’s market, the major record labels are interested in selling a product. They are not interested in artistic integrity, after all it is a business. Much like our website, The Empires are doing it by good ‘ol fashion word of mouth. So let’s get into the music:
The album has several stand out songs, but the one that stands out the most is the 4th track “Strangers.” If I closed my eyes, I could hear this song being played on the radio. It has a dark, yet pop sound to it that I think most people will enjoy. The guitar riffs, along with the lyrics, make this an enjoyable experience. “Damn Things Over” is another stand out track that sounds similar to the Killers. This band is in no way trying to be like the Killers, but their sound is similar. “Hello Lover” is an infectious rock-pop song that rounds off the album. “Bang” is filled, from start to finish, with great pop-rock songs that’ll have you singing every word in your car!
In all, the album is excellent and I think it is something that our readers will enjoy, but most of all, I give it my official approval! But if you don’t believe me, go to the band’s website, where you can stream the entire album for free! You can also buy the album directly from them or on iTunes or Amazon.
