Continuing on to 2011 is another local band, The Open Feel. They released their debut Ep “The Open Feel” in December of 2010. The Open Feel is one of the best bands to watch for in 2011 and they are also our first Artist of the Week of this year.
The Open Feel is comprised of Katie Harris and Tom Brayton. Both Harris and Brayton were studio musicians, hired to play on records of other artists, until they decided to make music together. The road wasn’t easy for The Open Feel, taking them about 1 ½ years to create the bands sound.
The band wanted to create music that was “as honest as possible for the two of us.”  Once they discovered their sound, the writing came next: “We had no idea what we wanted to write,” explains Katie. “We just started. We knew we wanted to discover who we are musically. We started writing music without worrying about what it was for – we just looked for sounds and songs we gravitated towards.”
When listening to their debut Ep, you immediately get taken back by the band’s full sound, especially considering that the band is a duo. The band’s sound can be easily compared to another popular Los Angeles duo, Seaspin. The band went into the studio and began listening to Bob Dylan, Radiohead, The Swell Season, Etta James, James Brown Sam Cooke, Led Zepplin and Pink Floyd.
Harris and Brayton played every instrument on every track on the Ep. They explained that “We have so many talented friends who were willing to come out and record with us, but scheduling was difficult and we were a little out of the way, so we started doing everything ourselves.”   Did I also mention that this dynamc duo also produced the Ep?
The 4 track Ep features the stand out hit “Still Here,” which combines clever lyrics with a great rock sound. “Strength” shows off Harris’ vocal range and gives you a glimpse of the raw talent that The Open Feel has.
The Open Feel will be touring to promote their Ep, so check their website for details on where to find them. Go to their website and become a fan and be given a free download of their music! The Open Feel will be gracing us at NoHo2 studios in February, so if you’re in the Hollywood area, pop in and see a great local band!
