Artist of the Week- Katie Costello

Any regular visitor to the site knows how highly we think of Katie Costello and her music.  Katie will be releasing an Ep this month entitled, “The City In Me.”  To celebrate Katie’s release and her amazing talent we are giving her the coveted Artist of the Week.

When Katie is not visiting libraries, playing the kazoo, or robbing banks up and down the west coast, she is sharing her gifts with her fans.  At first glance, Katie is absolutely gorgeous to look at, but don’t let the looks fool you.  Katie is not just another pretty face, but she is a talented singer/songwriter.  Her first release “Kaleidoscope Machine” was put into heavy rotation in my iPod.

Kaleidoscope Machine truly shows the depth of Costello’s voice and her writing.  The album is a collection of songs that are all slightly different, yet Costello brings a cohesiveness to the album with her engaging voice.  After getting to spend some time with Katie, she has an energy and an undeniable charm about her.  Her clever wit and engaging personality come through in Kaleidoscope Machine.

To see Costello live is a real treat.  Costello has an infectious persona that really comes to life in her stage show.  That persona reels you in and gets your attention, while her music and voice are hypnotic.  As a music fan, her shows leave you wanting more music and more Costello.  Costello really cares about her fans and those who come out to support her music.  You can often times get a chance to have access to this amazing person after or before the show.  In speaking with Costello you instantly connect and become more invested in her and her music.  Costello makes these connections almost effortlessly.

Costello is also a brilliant songwriter.  When you hear a Katie Costello song for the first time, you are seduced by her voice.  As you delve deeper into the album and begin to peel back the layers, you find a deeper meaning to the songs.

“People: A Theory” is an example of the various layers to Costello’s music.  The song has a pop feel to it, it’ll get you going in the morning for sure.  At the surface, the song is spot on with its lyrics.  Once you get deeper into the lyrical content, you find the humility with every person, whether they are rich, small, live in Paris or New York.   Costello’s voice shows a wide range in the song, and it doesn’t hurt that it sounds like a Dresden Dolls song either.

Her latest Ep “The City In Me” is a sneak peek at what is in store for us for Katie’s follow up album “Lamplight.”  Costello has been keeping her fans happy by playing piano versions of her songs to help her fans get acquainted with the songs and as she recently told us, it helps her stay in the album.

I am excited to hear what is next for Katie Costello, the future is bright for this twenty something singer/songwriter.  I don’t know too many things, but I know that Katie Costello will be making music fans like myself happy be releasing albums that are genuine and full of the same spunk that is Katie Costello!

  1. I once found Katie Costello in an Indie Spotlight in iTunes. She got me the first 5 Seconds. I want to be in New York, just to see this wonderful Human Being, and maybe even See her Music too. Absolutely, spontaneously, wonderful.

    Love,
