Artist of the Week-The Sandwitches

Your clues for this week may have been brief and limited, but within the clues was one very important thing…the answer!  This week, as mentioned in the show’s clues, was the celebration of Sandwich Day.  Well, it just so happens that our artist this week, a hip, garage-rock, girl band from the bay area, is named the Sandwitches!  Clever, eh?  Well, even if it’s not, their music is worth a listen and they’re November’s first artist of the week.

A part of San Francisco’s garage-rock scene, the trio comprised of Heidi Alexander, Grace Cooper, and Roxy Brodeur bring tons of heart and style to their music with their heavy atmosphere and gritty sound.  While pinpointing the band’s origin hasn’t been a certainty for this blogger, it does appear as though the band somehow sprang forth with assistance from fellow bay-area garage-rocker Sonny Smith.  What is known is that in 2009 the Sandwitches broke out with their debut album entitled How to Make Ambient Sadcake, and it brought with it the hook that catches peoples’ interests.

Nineteen-sixties musical influence seems to be the driving force in many bands trying to break into the scene and gain underground notoriety these days. While the San Francisco bay-area may be the apropos place to get your influence and your start, it often comes with the mightier-than-thou, pretentious attitude and sound that tends to cheapen music and disturb fans.  Not so with the Sandwitches.  Their style is matched by their substance and their musical aim appears to be for the cooler part of the 60’s (when people still wore suits) while incorporating folk and being recorded with the low-fi charm that has seen a steady comeback since John Darnielle and his Panasonic boombox with the Mountain Goats in the early 90’s.

The Sandwitches have kept with their performing and recording since their debut album and in March of this year released their sophomore album, Mrs. Jones’ Cookies.  Though the band may as of yet still be very under the radar, by the 15th of this month the band will begin their European tour, taking their melancholy, yet catchy tunes, proving that the tastiness of these Sandwitches is certainly making itself known.  Follow the links below to get your fix of these lovely ladies and, as Warren Zevon said, enjoy every sandwich!
