Lykke Li-Wounded Rhymes

There is something about artists that come out of the Nordic countries; they are all weird in some respect. Think about it: Bjork (Swan dress, and that is just the tip of the iceburg), HIM (dark love songs sung by a very femme looking man) , Turbonegro (Homo-erotic punk), the Hives (I guess suits is all I have on them, I love the Hives); regardless there is something weird about every one of them. Also, there is something great about every one of those bands. In Wounded Rhymes, Lykke Li makes no exception to the weird/ good Nordic equation.

Hailing from Sweden, Lykke Li isn’t necessarily the extremely attractive blonde in a snow-suit you may have come to expect. She is stunning in her own right, however she attracts you through her quirky songs of heartbreak. Its not in her voice, which sounds like a person after just getting up and smoking two cigarettes, after a night of yelling and drinking…ok, maybe not that bad. It’s also not in her musicianship, which is just mediocre at best, clumsily strummed acoustics and generic 60’s female pop beats It’s a combination of the two that seem to cancel out each other and really let the songwriting come forward to be the real star. (Produced by another Scandinavian oddity, Bjorn, of Peter Bjorn and John)

It is a very personal and introspective album that Ms. Li has put out, the songs are catchy, peaceful and even fun to listen to, despite the bittersweet heartbreak topics and at times darkness to it.. Lykke warns in the beginning of Get Some, “Like a shotgun needs an outcome I’m your prostitute, you gon’ get some” and in Wounded Rhymes we DO get some. Thanks Lykke…it was a very pleasurable album.

Other tasty ETS stuffs…
